The Dangers of Consuming Non-Organic Food

Monday, May 4th, 2009

You are what you eat! Engrave that in your mind or tattoo it to your forehead. I’m so tired of reading all these articles about obesity, and increase of disease, depression and all the common horrors. Have you seen the cancer and obesity rates in the U.S.? How about the rise of food allergies? Have you ever thought about it being our own fault? Yeap, what you eat is what you are. Food affects our system and if we continue to poison ourselves and if we do not make a change soon, those numbers of obesity and decease will never decrease.

The Elimination Diet

Friday, May 1st, 2009

The famous elimination diet or “Cave Man Diet” consists of simply removing all allergens. This is a strict diet that must be followed for a month minimum. All allergens must be removed in order for this diet to work. If you truly want to see results within a month, be strict and control what your child consumes. Do not (no matter how much she begs) allow her to have any of the foods that are NOT included in the diet (yes, you must eliminate candy and chicken nuggets).  If you do allow a processed food or allergen to be consumed, you have to restart this process. The purpose of the diet is to clear all symptoms and give a break to you child’s immune system. After all toxins are removed from the body it will be easier to train the immune system to accept them (see step three for curing allergies).

Prevent Anaphylactic Shock

Sunday, April 26th, 2009

The first step to preventing the shock is knowing what allergens can cause it. Take your child to an allergist and determine which allergy test is best for her. After reviewing the results try to avoid the allergen till she can tolerate it. Then educate everyone who comes in contact with your child about her allergies. Provide a list of allergens to avoid to the daycare facility along with an allergy emergency kit in case a reaction occurs. If your child is very sensitive and has a long list of allergens that she cannot tolerate, it’s best that you provide her own lunch and snacks vs. running the risk of her consuming the allergen at school. Prior to preparing her lunch read all the labels and try to avoid spices and seasonings.

Prevent Allergic Reactions

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

Preventing allergic reactions is the most difficult process. Most of the allergy skin tests and blood tests provide results to common food and environmental allergies. As I mentioned in my previous post, keep a diary of everything that your child consumes. If an allergic reaction occurs, after treatment you can review the diary to identify the allergen. Also discuss with your allergist an emergency allergy plan, in case a severe reaction occurs such as an anaphylactic shock. I always keep an emergency allergy kit in the house and in the daycare with instructions on what to do. There’s a form that you can print out and take to the daycare after discussing the dosage with your allergist http://foodallergy.org/downloads/FAAP.pdf This simple form and emergency allergy kit can save your child’s life.
